I ran a number of small to medium-sized mailing lists (400 to 2000 users per
list) for a couple of years using Majordomo on a 486/66
with 32 megs of ram and Redhat 5.1. It worked like a champ. I finally upgraded that
machine not because it was too slow to crunch on all the
mail, but because I was starting to run low on hard drive space, I was adding a bunch
more lists and the drive was starting to make strange
noises. :-)
I figured it was a good time to make a clean break up to a faster machine and
a newer release.
Processing mail isn't as intense of a job as serving up web hits or running a
database server, so those little boxes like 486's and Sparc
IPX's seem to do just fine at it.
