RH6.1 freezes on shutdown after killall

When I try to shut down my mailserver AMD K6-II/400, Soyo 5EH motherboard,
ram 64MB, disk 30GB, RedHat 6.1, it freezes right after "starting killall".
That means the UPS cannot protect the system on longer power failures.
And the e2fsck on 30GB takes more time than my patience can take.

How can I track down what causes that ?
