Thanks in advance ....

This posting is a followup to my earlier ones about /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
and my
system's failure to run fsck after a power failure, and to omit normal
shutdown
messages. This aberration has been going on for a long time.

A special thanks to Agustin Navarro, Todd Jacobs, Brian Feeny, and
Richard KHOO
for trying to help me resolve my problems. I tried almost all of what
they suggested,
but the system and my ignorance prevailed.

Finally my system bootup deteriorated to the point that it would not
boot to Linux (sdb1,sdb2,sdb3), although it would boot to MSW3.1 (sda1)
and Dell-Unix (sda2), which are on a different hard drive from the one
used
for Linux. I suspected the Linux HD was going or gone, so I tried a
reinstall as a last attempt to save the system.

I booted from my boot floppy, re-installed from the RHL4.2 CD, allowed
fdisk to reformat the Linux root partition (sdb1), and went through the
normal install process. There were three surprises:

  1. The hard drive seems ok, in that it took the reinstall and I can
use it
in text mode normally. (X is not working - that's problem #2)
  2. The Linux home partition (sdb3) did not have its user files, even
though
I didn't format it. (but those are on my backup tape, so maybe
that's ok)
  3. The system still will only boot from a boot floppy. That's problem
#1.

I copied /etc/lilo.conf from my backup tape, ran lilo, and tried to
boot from the hard drive: this failed. When I try to boot from the HD I
get the normal boot messages and then "LI" on the console and it hangs
there. It will still boot from a floppy though.

I'm wondering about the MBR. The install process didn't talk to me about
the MBR,
and I didn't do anything about it, to my knowledge. Is that where my
problem is?
If so, how would I learn about MBR's and how to fix them?

Ah, ignorance is not bliss.

Thanks again,
