Thank you Bill, you were right on the money. I read the logs in
/var/logs and there was not mention of 'local12', but the syslog.conf
file did tell me what it was. I had ppp and chat send messages to
/var/log/ppp to help me debug the modem set up.
Which leads into another question, in syslog.conf, local17 is listed
as messages to ~/boot.log, and local12 to ~/ppp, why does only the
listing from local12 show up on boot as "unknown" ? What is the
difference between the two?
