Yes, you are right, but the configuration of your 
file (did you use xf86config ?) should have created an entry
for non-interlaced 1280x1024.

Maybe you didn't specify your monitor with the right parameters.

If the frequencies are too low, it might be the entries are not generated by the 
configurator.

you might want to try to add this one 

# 1280x1024 @ 61 Hz, 64.2 kHz hsync
Modeline "1280x1024"  110    1280 1328 1512 1712  1024 1025 1028 1054
