- is where to put
the archive for an executable for a program? In Windows I always
downloaded to a "Downloads' directory...not sure if creating one in
Linux would be the way to go or if Linux has a default place it puts
these sorts of things when you rpm and/or install new software...

I have a directory called upgrades in my home directory
/home/general/upgrades where I download rpm and tar files
this way if I want the source again it is easy to find. Some
tar files unpack in the current directory most make a subdirectory
that they unpack to. If they unpack in the upgrade file I create
a sub directory and move the files to it. Also if you want to keep
a copy of the gunzip files for transfering to others ect you might want
a directory /home/general/upgrade/gz and stick a copy in it as when
it unzips you don't have the original
Hope this helps also if you want to get rid of everything but what
you actually need to run the program when your done you might
want to download it to /usr/tmp
