For me at least...
Okay, so it seems that xfs is flakey and ttmkfdir is not 100%, but can
work... (oh and apparently I'm using Mandrake Helios)
The big problem (in my case) appears to be blank spaces in the font
names!!! This was only a problem after running ttmkfdir. If the spaces
are removed from the names then xfs will run after creating the
fonts.dir with ttmkfdir. (the prob was 'beast wars.ttf' which was part
of the orig distro.)
(BTW the /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start stop and status commands came in
handy here for debugging :-) I only knew about restart, but restart
apparently won't work once xfs has died and the lock file is still
there.)
ttmkfdir doesn't seem to handle all fonts. Some not at all, but hard to
tell if the problem is with the font or ttmkfdir. I am sure that many of
the tt fonts included with the distro worked originally, but now many
don't. I'll have to get the original fonts.dir from the rpms to see if
it works (and how it works!!!)... I'll look...
Ooops, no, just checked the distro rpms and they weren't included in the
fonts.dir there either... I guess some of the free ttfonts weren't
'compatible'. BTW, the original distro seems to work by having NO SPACE
in the name of 'beast wars.ttf' in the fonts.dir!!! Once you run
ttmkfdir and put a space in the name in the fonts.dir then that kills
xfs.
BTW, other ttf fonts will work for me (with help). I've added a couple
of dozen from one of those cheap font CD's, but the fonts.dir has to be
editted by hand to remove some of the non-iso8859 stuff... Then they
work fine.
In all a pain, but useable with some work.
At least it works now!
Thanks for your patience...
