There's a document on the Red Hat web site called, "Red Hat Linux 6.1
Gotchas and Workarouds". I recommend EVERYONE read it. Lots of good stuff
there. Including item 6.19, "Sound doesn't work in KDE"
If you have no sound at all, run sndconfig OUTSIDE of X (i.e. telinit 3) to
get it running. Then proceed as follows.
Once you've got sound, then make a symbolic link as follows:
As root, in a terminal, type:
ln -s /etc/sysconfig/soundcard /etc/sysconfig/sound
Reboot.
I had the same problem. This fixed it.
