1) Make sure "Plug & Play OS" in your BIOS is set to "No." This has to be
set even with a non-WinModem, hereinafter refereed to a RealModem.

2) Go to Modem under Control Panel. Obtain the exact specifications of
your modem. If this does not show exact specifications, try viewing the
driver from the Device tab under System in Control Panel. If none of the
above works, you'll have to rip open the case and examine the physical modem
card itself for specification. Copy down everything, especially the FCC
number. Then do a search for the device on various sites, including
www.windrivers.com

3) If you set the modem up right, and it's not clicking or dialing or
anything, it's a WinModem.

For a good deal on a RealModem, go to www.cdw.com and check out the Viking
56K (Real)Modem with Speakerphone (Mfg. Part No. RFM56KISPB) for about $85.
I have that exact model in my PC for Linux and Windoze 95, and the modem
works fine in both.

If any further PPP setup trouble ensues -- aside from your lack of a
RealModem -- check out http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html

Tip: In futer posts, try to include exact technical specifications and
details.

Thanks.
