I didn't had to reinstall RH6.1 to lose my icons. I don't know what that
problem was, but anyway i solved it by looking into /etc/skel and copying
the whole Desktop directory (inside you'll see the floppy.lnk, cdrom.lnk,
etc.) to my home directory under '.gnome-desktop', then using the right
button of the mouse over the desktop choose 'rescan desktop file' or
something like this. That should get you the aliases or shortcuts to
floppy, cdrom, home directory and URLs, although you'll have to set the
correct icons for each one.
