How are you starting x ?

startx        is the correct way, if you have been using the login screen
called xdm , then it changes quite a few things.........whats more that
error can mean lots of things...........

do this at a prompt as root

startx &> x.log

after it tries to start, read the error log and you should be closer to a
resolution........the above assumes that X did actually install from the
install procedure, and you did see something ....

go to http://www.xfree86.org/ and get the card listmake sure the correct X
server is installed .......
