Once you start Star Office 'soffice &' you'll get the main screen which
includes icons for "new document", "new spreadsheet", "new
presentation", and so forth. These are also underneath the file/new menu
box. So, to get to the spreadsheet, you open up a new spreadsheet.

I wonder why not. It should. There's a little arrow on the file/new
entry -- did you move the mouse to the right? That will expose the
sub-menu.
