thanks to Dave's suggestions I succesfully got that "moving" linux box
transported to the other side of campus and working properly .. thing is,
now I have another problem. For some reason I cannot start httpd .. it
keeps telling me that I have no hostname .. but i do .. chacked a
million places and ran hostname also .. here was the output -
<snip>
[root@conan /root]# httpd: cannot determine local host name.
Use ServerName to set it manually.
</snip>
so i uncommented the Servername part of httpd.conf .. and now I got this:
<snip>
[root@conan conf]# httpd: cannot determine the IP address of the
specified ServerName (conan.hartford.edu).
</snip>
Now .. this never happened to me before. I had this saem machine in
another spot with another ip .. and apache worked fine.. inetd got it
going on every boot. The ip is correct as far as I know .. hell.. i can
telnet into it .. ping it .. the whole shebang. just can't get the http
daemon running. what gives ?? any sugestions ?
one more thing .. if anyone ever needs to just change an ip of a machine
in a move .. the only file that needs to be changed is
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 .. I changed only that ip ..
and it worked like a charm. Maybe that's a clue as to what's up with the
web server.. TIA !
