I am running RH5.1 and setting up a network printer that prints over IP
(LPR; not Samba), to a WinNT server that is running LPD. I use the
printer configuration utility from X-windows, but am having some
problems.

Here are the symptoms:
    1. The NT LPD has been configured and works properly for other
machines, such as Win95 clients running a third-party LPR product and
another NT box running LPR. The printer is a HP LaserJet 4P and is
attached directly to the NT server that is running the LPD.
    2. I defined the printer on the Linux box using the printer config
utility, and can successfully print out an ascii test page to the
network printer.
    3. Using the lpq command, I get an accurate view of the queue as it
appears on the NT server running the LPD.
**4. When attempting to print a page from qhostview or netscape, I
get a bunch of garbage.
    5. If I hook the printer up directly to the parallel port of the
Linux box, I can print from netscape and ghostview without errors.
    6. The LPD is set up to spool to the printer in RAW mode.
    7. The LPR is set up with the LaserJet 4/5/6 filter.

Why is it printing fine when sending it in ascii, but anything other
than ascii it has a problem with? It would seem like there was a
problem with the conversion to PCL, but what confuses me is that it
works properly if I hook the printer up directly. This then leads me to
believe that it is a problem with NT's LPD. But LPD works for other
machines, and it also works for Linux when the document is ascii.
Does anyone have any ideas???

Thanks,
Jim
