I recently had to replace a drive in one of our machines which turned out to have bad blocks. Now the other drive is having problems, as shown by the following log messages: Apr 26 17:29:20 user kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Apr 26 17:29:20 user kernel: ide1: reset: success Apr 26 17:29:30 user kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Apr 26 17:29:30 user kernel: ide1: reset: success Apr 26 17:29:48 user kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Apr 26 17:29:48 user kernel: ide1: reset: success Apr 26 17:29:58 user kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Apr 26 17:29:58 user kernel: ide1: reset: success Apr 26 17:30:08 user kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Apr 26 17:30:08 user kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 16:02, sector 2146340 Apr 26 17:30:08 user kernel: hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Apr 26 17:30:08 user kernel: hdc: drive not ready for command Apr 26 17:30:08 user kernel: EXT2-fs error (device 16:02): ext2_read_inode: unable to read inode block - inode=268354, block=1073170 Apr 26 17:30:09 user kernel: ide1: reset: success Apr 26 17:30:19 user kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Apr 26 17:30:19 user kernel: ide1: reset: success Apr 26 17:30:29 user kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Apr 26 17:30:29 user kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 16:02, sector 2 Apr 26 17:30:29 user kernel: hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Apr 26 17:30:29 user kernel: hdc: drive not ready for command Apr 26 17:30:29 user kernel: ide1: reset: success ...and a similar error the next day. A file that our http logs show was accessed at this time is now inaccessible; it gives an "I/O error" whenever I try to read, write, move, or delete it. Could this be a symptom of an IDE controller going bad? It seems unlikely that both drives would fail so close together otherwise, and also this error message seems like it would be more likely caused by the controller.
