Re xanim:

The copyright/licensing/patenting/distribution/what-have-you information
provided by the xanim author (who is named Mark Podlipec and deserves to
be referred to by name), when assembled from its various locations and
chopped up so that only the relevant parts remain, reads as follows:

I can not distribute source code for [insert module name here]
so I instead distribute object modules that have been
precompiled for various machine and OS combinations. The modules
are then linked into XAnim at compile time.

The Cinepak Decompression Modules for Xanim are owned by Radius
and are licensed to the user, not sold or given away.
These modules may not be distributed without this readme file.
Or in other words, any distribution of these modules must be
    accompanied by this readme file.

You MAY NOT sell or distribute [the Indeo Decompression
Module for XAnim] without direct written permission from
    [Mark Podlipec]

You MAY NOT sell or distribute [the CYUV Decompression Module
for XAnim] without direct written permission from
    [Mark Podlipec]

I must I'm afraid plead ignorance ;^) because I'm not a huge programmer
and was not aware that an object file (which is not source code) and the
binary linked with the object file are to be considered the same; i.e.,
that distributing the binary is equivalent to distributing the object
file.

William Wilson is wrong when he says that Mark is clear about what may or
may not be distributed. Let me try and compose a truly clear presentation
of the necessary information, assuming Mr. Wilson is correct regarding the
distribution of xanim:

Never never never distribute any of these object files or any
binary linked with these object files. It is against the law.

That would be clear. Very clear even. Mr. Wilson is at least partly
mistaken, however, because individuals may distribute versions of xanim
linked with the Radius Cinepak object module, as long as a certain
document is included with those distributions. The rules regarding the
other two modules are more vague.

To avoid being made out a rogue, I am removing the xanim RPM in question
from distribution. However, I have created, and will distribute, a
version with Radius Cinepak support built in until somebody can convince
me that this is also legally questionable. It is in directory /pub/tmp at
freebie.engin.umich.edu.

Just in case anybody wants to rat me out: Mark Podlipec is aware of
everything I've done during the course of this fiasco that started out as
some fooling around over lunch.

I've also loaded up the speakers my sister-in-law's boyfriend gave me last
Christmas and turned them in to the local authorities.
