Probably should use it anyway.  It keeps your password files organized, it
is better than mounting /etc/passwd over NFS.  You can often do things
that way and get away with it (I have done it myself) but you really
should not.  :)

Yes.  Much.  Although it's still not a terribly efficient protocol in the
first place.  If you're planning to swap over NFS (not a happy idea) you
probably ought to use at least 100Mb ethernet.  Don't bother making it
switched, unless you're swapping to several different servers...
