Hi, [ Standalone X and exporting a DISPLAY variable works fine this is to use the redhat boxes as X terminals to the local machine or remote redhat boxes. ] I'm struggling getting X to run so that I get a chooser listing all redhat boxes, allowing me to do an xlogin to the one I want once I select it. If I sit at H1 I'd like to get a xdm chooser listing boxes H1 .. H6, R3, so that I can log into any of these boxes (with the appropriately configured X environment) at will. Host H1 H2 H3 H4 H5 H6 | | | | | | Network --------------------------------------- Hardware RH RH RH Sun Sun RS6K local X Yes Yes No Yes No No Display? The default X setups don't seem to allow me to do this, and I'm not very clear with the xdm man pages, nor with my "X user tools" oreilly book. I've actually access to 3 redhat boxes, 2 Suns and a RS/6000, so once I work out how to do this properly with the redhat boxes I guess it shouldn't be too difficult to include these boxes. We also have several Windows PCs running X server software which I'd like to configure likewise to have access to any of the available hosts. I realise that this is not very redhat specific, but at least with one common version of X and the xdm and X configuration files maybe I can get this to run properly. I guess this requires an appropriate setting of xdm/Xaccess xdm/Xservers xdm/.. files together with (I think) some of the gobal xinitrc Xclients files. When I either don't get a chooser, or don't get a login (I can login to one redhat box as root, but not as a non-root user) I find it difficult to diagnose where the problem is, so that I can correct it. Any pointers as to what to look at (or practical examples) would help enormously, or if you can suggest a good source of info please point me in the right direction.
