Good solutions need good symptoms to start from.  Record and report
error messages carefully.  If using X you can easily copy them and paste
them into a file, then include the file in your mail.

After creating the partition you must make a file system
which builds the basic structure in which to store the data
and manage the space.  This is done with the mkfs command.
mke2fs could be used instead.
