Are you hooking the cable modem to a hub/router.  If it is a hub there
is only one port to hook the modem to and you do need a crossover cable
most of the time.  If you are going directly to the PC then you need to
try with a crossover and you need to try with a straight cable.  This
maybe your problem.  Try both types of cables with the hub or directly
to the PC.
