am using grub as a bootloader and yes its already in there - take a look 

root (hd0,4)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-6 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi noapic

I have seen this problem fixed by booting with the 'noapic' kernel
option set (at lilo prompt type 'linux noapic' , or put into your
lilo.conf, in the images section of the linux you're booting, 
append "noapic"  and rerun lilo.)

Maybe this'll help, maybe not.
