I'm trying to install a newer version of SAMBA. I downloaded
smbfs-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm and went to install it. I typed rpm -ivh
smbfs... The RPM client then says:

failed dependencies:
        libc.so.6 is needed by smbfs-2.0.1-1
        ld-linux.so.2 is needed by smbfs-2.0.1-1

I'm new to Linux, so my best guess was that since I am running
an older version of RedHat (4.1), I must need some new shared library
file or something. I got onto the RedHat site, I found the two files
and downloaded them. I guessed they belonged in the /lib directory
because there are a number of similar files, mainly libc.so.5.3.12
and ld-linux.so.1.7.14. I ran the rpm client again, but I still get
the same dependency error.

Can someone tell me what I'm missing? I obviously don't understand
file dependencies and how to satisfy them. I looked in the man
pages, in the books that I have purchased, etc..., but couldn't find
anything that might point me in the right direction.

T.I.A. for your patience and help!

Regards,
Donovan
