I believe this has already been mentioned, but I thought I'd reiterate: PuTTY 
and VNC make a GREAT pair-- both Freeware apps and they work great together. 
Using PuTTY you can create an encrypted tunnel (SSH) and then use 
VNC/TightVNC/XVnc to view the remote desktop...through the encrypted tunnel. 
:-) Free, cheap and relatively painless... :-) Hopefully you'll have "big 
pipes" (i.e. 100 Mbit LAN at least) to do this, though...
