John, What desktop environment are you using? I run GNOME/Nautlius on my system, and I saw exactly this problem a couple of times in the past. The solution turned out to be to open a terminal and start up Nautilus from the command line ( $ nautilus ). Do you regularly log in as root this way? I have found it's much safer to log in with my user account and then su to root only when absolutely necessary. Sliante, Richard S.
