simple script question

Sorry if this question is a no brainier, I'm a little new to Linux.   I have a standard file that is generated that I would like to have script run and change the name on that file automatically to the date of that day for archiving. IE. report.txt change to 6-11-03.txt or even just add another extension to the file report.txt.1 - report.txt.2 etc.   If anyone has any input or could point me in the right direction it would be greatly helpful.   Thanks in advance!   justin
