Short answer: partition numbering in the partition table has changed and
lilo is unable to boot because it can't find the proper partition
number.

Explanation: XP (or most Microsoft products) like to renumber the
partition table so that the Windows OS runs on partition #1; so if
you've installed RH first on those, then XP second, any change you make
will cause the table to be renumbered and the RH will be toasted; but
you can re-edit the /etc/lilo.conf on those machines and recover them.
