Ok I set it up like the link that you gave me states but its still not asking for the userid and password is there something I doing wrong or is there a setting somewhere to tell the system to look for the .htaccess file on the directory.
RTFM for the web server you are using.
In the case of Apache 1.3.27, I have the documentation available online[0].
