I've started doing this anytime I add memory to a system.  So far faulty
RAM is the only thing that has ever caused me to have to do a reinstall
of Linux (extensive FS corruption).  A few hours of memory testing can
save you lots of grief.

Eric,

Does it do this immediately upon logging in or are you doing something
first (i.e. running an application or configuring something)?  The Gnome
panel is not above crashing.  I manage to do it every so often.
