Leafnode should not be running all the time, it's activated automatic
by inetd when something connects to the nntp port. You should not need
to add anything to /etc/hosts.allow. The first thing you should do
after installing leafnode, is to dial up your ISP, and as user root or
news run fetch. Leafnode will then fetch all newsgroups. Next you
subscribe to the newsgroups you want from your newsreader pointing at
localhost. Then you try to read in each newsgroup you subscribed
to. You will get a bogus message, but this is alright. After that you
run fetch again and all the messages in the groups you subscribed to
will be fetched. Note that it can take quite a while the first time
you do this, so you probably want to set maxfetch in
/usr/lib/leafnode/config to a low value the first time. Also remember
to point the server value in the same config file to the newsserver
which leafnode will fetch news from.
