Try changing the fonts in the terminal to something fixed - or something
common. It could be merely the fonts aren't setup correctly. I
experienced this right after the first installation of RH 8.0 - it had
something to do with either Xft or Freetype; but after changing all my
system fonts, everything worked like a charm.
