I too had the same problem, but I was not using a Belkin switch box.
What I did for all of RedHat 7.x, was to CTRL+ALT+F1 and then
CTRL+ALT+F7. That would always work for me. 

Now that I'm using the RH 8 and now RH 8.1 Beta, I don't need to do that
anymore.
