OpenLDAP?

I am looking into investigating the ins and outs of OpenLDAP.  The rpm –q openldap shows the packages is installed.  However, the documentation on their site revolves around the slapd daemon with the slapd.conf file for its configuration.  I am only finding a reference to slapd in the man pages and there is no slapd.conf example file.   Furthermore, there is no slapd in the system.  Am I missing something here?   Larry S.
