If you are looking for a program to talk to devices on a serial port,
you may want to look at minicom.  If you are looking for a tool to use
to script talking to these devices, you may want to look at chat. If you
want to use a serial printer, lpd can be configured to talk to serial
printers.  For monitoring a serial connected UPS, you have severial 
options, depending on the model of the UPS.  For other serial devices, 
it depends on the device.  You are better off doing a search on the 
device then on how it communicates.
