That probably will not be a lot of help - then way memtest86 does it is 
to create a stand-alone memory test that doesn't use an OS to run under.  
Instead it talks directly to the hardware.  It does a much better memory 
test then you could do under Linux.  I am not sure you can do a good 
memory test on a running multi-user OS.  It would definitly have to be 
run by root.  It would also play havic with the rest of the programs 
running on the machine!
