RH8 system stops responding during lynx downloads

I'm encountering a very peculiar problem on a box that I just installed RH8 
on.  The problem is that when I use lynx to download files from websites, 
the box terminates the shell session and completely stops responding.  I've 
looked through /var/log/messages and see nothing notable.  I understand 
that this is a very vague description of the problem.  I've never 
encountered this problem before on any RH box I've used running RH7.3 or 
earlier.

system specs:

IBM Netvista A21
PIII @ 1 gig
256 Meg memory
Maxtor 40 gig hard drive
OS summary:

RH 8
webserver equivalent install
no firewalling options selected
This box is at home on a network behind a linksys router.  I have the 
linksys router set to dmz this new RH8 box.  I am shelling into this box 
from another computer at home.
