Thanx to all who helped. Tried each and every suggestion. None seemed to
work. Some I'd tried before but, tried them again anyway.
Not sure how but, it now works. I tired everything but, no-go. Tried
rebooting after each change (just in case) and still nada. Some of the
changes would let me continue starting x in root but, fail in user.
Finally reran Xconfigurator. Told it to probe, didn't accept default
settings, changed it to only have a 16bpp setting and suddenly, startx
defaults to 16.
Did that do it? Who knows. I'd tried it before and it didn't seem to
make any difference. This time it did. I'll just save the configs and
hope I don't ever have to reinstall Linux again in my life (unlikely
since I'm still new enough to screw things up royally).
