I've been following this thread, but did you take another poster's suggestion of enabling DMA?

I don't recall you answering you tried that or not.

It would certainly speed up performance as much as 300% on VIA boards from
experience.

First of all thanks a lot for the interest and your answers!!

I did not tried the DMA setting before because I thought I had DMA already enabled (in my boot logs it appeard as hdc:DMA) but now I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that it was only a BIOS setting and that RH 8 as stated in the link kindly provided didn't have it enabled by default. I changed what I had to change (just add a line in /etc/modules.conf) reboot and *voila* the performance increases as you say a 300%.
