Glad to hear that someone has same 'strange' experience also. I was having same problem, with 2 eth cards, sometimes (but happens frequently) the network is up but can ping nowhere except its own IP. all light are on nd normal. Problem only happens on eth0 only, which connected to Cisto catalyst switcth. problem gone by stop/start network, but sometimes need to reboot.
I already changes cable, port and even to 3Com switch but still no luck. Even changing with other eth card also ( 3c905 100BaseTX [Boomerang]), other brand (Dlink), differrent pci slot. Using RH default kernel or compiled driver in kernel still same problem. Problem reduce (but not solved) when set it manually to 10MB/fixed. FYI, the second eth card (eth1) connected to 10MB only switch never having this kind of problems.
