Rather than trying to reinstall Gnome, try logging into your box as another user. Do they have the same problems that your user is having? Your "desktop" or Gnome user settings are located in your home directory. It's much more likely to be an issue with your user files than the Gnome files. Just a hunch... Don't mean to preach here but Linux isn't Windows where every problem is fixed with a reinstall. What happens when you have the same problem in a few weeks.
