This is almost always caused by your DNS not working.  Make sure your
local host name is in /etc/hosts and point yourself at a valid
nameserver.

The system is not really hanging - it's just pausing while all the
nameserver resolutions timeout.  If you're patient, it will finally
continue.

Whenever you have a hard crash - and I'm assuming you rebooted or
powered down - a disk check will be forced.  Your disk is likely not
corrupt, and you don't have to re-install.  Just let fsck continue
checking and repairing the disk if necessary, and you'll be fine.

Long term, I'd recommend you upgrade to a more recent version of Red Hat
Linux.  There are certainly known security holes in your kernel, many of
the packages you're running, and depending on which sendmail you're
installing, there will be holes there too.  Some of these holes are
remotely exploitable.  Please don't put a very old Linux system on the
Internet - it makes the rest of us look bad when you get hacked.
