Try editing XF86Config directly.  It's in /etc/X11.  Make a backup
copy before you change anything.

Look for the part that looks like this:

  Section "Pointer"
    Protocol    "Auto"

Assuming it's a serial trackball connected to a serial port, try
setting protocol to "Auto" or "IntelliMouse".

My understanding about "Auto" is that XFree86 3.3.2 will do a PnP
interrogation of the mouse and then it should work.  Try it.
