None of the Linux users that I personally know use Webmin or SWAT for Samba. They're all hard core geeks and do it with vi or EMACS. I prefer Webmin to SWAT. I used SWAT a few years ago when I first got into Linux, and didn't care for what it did to the conf file (however it is loads better than what Linuxconf will do to it). Most of the time I vi my smb.conf file...just quicker for me, but I've used Webmin for it, and it keeps the file clean. Plus Webmin will help you with many other services / applications / servers in Linux.

webmin vs swat?

No. If you put the cd in the drive that you install Windoze off of,
after Windoze has already been installed, does the install program start
again?

SWAT is nasty, but that's just IMHO. If you're going to configure Samba
with a GUI, I'd recommend Webmin (http://www.webmin.com)

If you want to go with SWAT, it's on the third cd. You can install it
via command line after you change to the directory that it's in (on your
system, probably /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS) using this command...

rpm -ivh samba-swat-2.2.5-10.i386.rpm

....or, if you're logged in on the physical machine (using the gui), you
could just open up an "Explorer" window, and double click the swat rpm
file.

putting in the first CD again won't the install begin again? I am new to
Linux / Unix. I come from a mainframe / windows background.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk or anything, but is this your first
computer?

Hi,

What version of samba comes with 8.0 and How can I download the

latest

copy of SWAT? Your help is appreciated.
Swat is included as a sub package.

$ whichcd -v 8.0 samba

Searching for samba...
CD-2:samba-2.2.5-10.i386.rpm
CD-2:samba-client-2.2.5-10.i386.rpm
CD-2:samba-common-2.2.5-10.i386.rpm
CD-3:samba-swat-2.2.5-10.i386.rpm

- -Michael

What this tells you is that the swat rpm is named
samba-swat-2.2.5-10.i386.rpm and is located on CD #3.

Insert the correct cd and run

rpm -ivh samba-swat-2.2.5-10.i386.rpm

that say install verbosely with hash marks showing progress the

package

contained in the file samba-swat-2.2.5-10.i386.rpm. We are assuming
that such a package is indeed swat :)
