Thank you. I had searched, but not in the right places with the correct 
search string. Based on the article, I found an "echo bashrc here" debug 
statement I had put in /etc/bashrc some time back and had promptly forgotten 
about. I was looking in all the wrong places for the cause. You have saved me 
a lot more agony.
