I had done that, yes. BUT:

You mentioning this made me have a look at /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date

The http proxy was listed OK, but for some reason the GUI hadn't set the use
proxy option to 1.

I have no idea how that can happen, I can't imagine it's a bug, it MUST be
something I've done.

However. With the proxy enabled (correctly) it works.

It does not explain why I should need to use my proxy (I've been trying with
and without), but if that settles it I'll just throw my hands up and call it
a day.
