Jeffrey,
    Thanks again for the link.  Disabling the on-board Ethernet did do the
trick (surprisingly).  Re-enabling it once the install completed was fine
(although kudzu did not pick it up, a simple 'insmod tlan' did).
    I'm off to check the Compaq site for any drivers specific to my set up
(I have a bunch of those Compaq hot swap drives, and would love the system
to really understand them).
