Unless you need to allow mail relays at all, turn it off. That doesn't stop mail from being delivered to your mail host (or to be sent from it); it just prevents third-party deliveries. If you must allow relaying for some reason, restrict it to known hosts and/or IP's, and enable pop-before-smtp if possible. Better yet, set up squirrelmail, and avoid the whole issue. If you want specific help, you'll need to provide your sendmail.cf or (for postfix) main.cf configuration information. Otherwise, check out the docs on the web site for your MTA.
