I've found a site http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pctel-linux/
that describes a way to get my pctel modem to work on my laptop. I've read the 
readme file and it askes me to find out the chipset

2) Find out what chipset you have in your board:

3) ./configure
Options:

--with-hal=hal
Select one of: pct789, cm8738, i8xx, sis, via686a

It may be a bit of a stupid question but how can I do that? Are there any 
programs for either windows or linux that'll help me figure that out? If it 
helps I still have the pre-installed windows XP Pro still installed!
I'd appreciate any help at all.
