I wound up getting Geoff set up.

For whatever the reason, the system kept coming back and telling him that 
/dev/hdc was not a valid block device.

When all was said and done, we loaded up the ide-scsi stuff, and are 
mounting /dev/scd0, instead of /dev/hdc.
