Are you perchance running RedHat5.0 on Linux/Alpha? It is rather broken!
Maybe the latest glibc update will help, who knows...

Out of interest who at RedHat "heads" the Alpha port? RedHat5.0 was OK
apart from maybe 3-4 showstoppers, which is a shame. It would be nice to
have the alpha specific problems fixed.

Members of the linux-axp list are usually more than happy to assist
demonstating/reproducing the problems :)
