Make sure your have everything set proper in your /etc/sysconfig/network file.
eg.
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=linux.dan-hander.com <--thats a fake name for local network use.
DOMAINNAME=dan-hander.com
#GATEWAY=192.168.0.254
#GATEWAYDEV=eth0
